Courses for Volunteer Organists
NEXT
COURSE:
Tuesday 24th
- Wednesday 25th November 2009
at Sarum College, The Cathedral Close, Salisbury
Cost
per person inc. full accommodation and tutoring - £195
Tutoring
on this course is very rewarding as those attending are in real need of information and guidance. All tutors are experienced
in dealing with the problems faced by those who volunteer to play the organ in their church and they endeavour to equip the
player with immediate information needed for survival! Limited time to practise, the unique features of your own church
organ and immediate service-playing needs are taken into consideration.
Time
is spent in making sure that the player knows the instrument well and begins to feel confident with the stops, swell pedal
and keyboard touch. They are then introduced to the delights of the pedal-board. A scheme of work is given to those planning
to return after three/four months and both repertoire and service playing are given attention. We also get behind the organ
case and explain how the organ works.
Participants stay in the historic Sarum College situated
within the medieval Cathedral Close and accommodation is comfortable with superb food. Instruments used on the courses vary
from the very small to the very large! The two small organs in Sarum College, one of which is situated in its own room, provide
facilities during the course for those wishing to practise and as well as other organs in Salisbury, the organs in Romsey
Abbey and Salisbury Cathedral are used.
As
the number of churches looking for organists increases and the number of trained organists willing to commit to regular service
playing dwindles, the volunteer organist is becoming a valued resource. These regular courses aim to provide the necessary
training in a flexible and sympathetic package.
Many churches have
supported their Volunteer Organist by paying for the course as ‘in-service training’ and many former course members
have reported on the immediate impact that this training has had in the worship of their churches.

At Sarum College, Salisbury
Cost per person inc. full accommodation and tutoring - £195
Are you continuing to volunteer to play the organ in your church?
If you are, you may like to come back for a refresher course? A repeated overnight stay in Sarum
College Salisbury with revision on the basics of playing the organ.
Sympathetic and experienced tutors give you clear guidance about organ stops, hymn playing, useful
repertoire and service playing. Meet up with others from your first course and share your experience of playing for services.
These courses are for organists who have been on a course for volunteer organists and are wanting a refresher
course and further training in:
service and hymn playing
using stops, tabs, pistons
choosing appropriate music
pedals, swell boxes, couplers etc.
performance nerves
practice technique
Many of our course participants have asked for ongoing training
as they get to grips with playing for services in their churches. This top-up course builds on earlier training and provides
a progress report and confidence boost!

Reluctant = Volunteer...
These courses continue the long tradition of supportive courses for
Reluctant Organists at the RSCM's former home, Addington Palace, which took place under the inspiring tutelage of Jeannette
Cooper. It is a direct tribute to her work that these courses have been continued by Robert Fielding and the team of
dedicated tutors.
Tutors
Tutors on the course will
be Robert Fielding (Course Director), Rosemary Field, Richard Godfrey, Cathy Lamb and Daniel Moult. All have specialist
skills in understanding the problems at this level and are able to give advice on practice methods, controlling nerves, repertoire,
starting to pedal, simple improvisation and a suggested scheme of work for between the courses and beyond. Many churches have
supported their 'reluctant' organist by paying for the course as training and many former course members have reported on
the immediate impact that this training has in the worship of that church.
Courses in your Area
If there are enough volunteer organists in your area wishing to receive training in
playing the organ, then a course can be tailor-made to suit you.
