Review
from Church Music Quarterly April 2001.
Many
organists will have made ad hoc arrangements of Howells’s Clavichord. Robert Fielding has done us considerable service
in taking five – Ralph’s Pavane, Patrick’s Siciliano, Malcolm’s Vision, Finzi’s Rest and Dyson’s
Delight. It is good to have these pieces available in such skilful arrangements. Where others might have been content with
redistributing parts, Howells’s own writing for the organ has been taken as a guide. Reference was made to Barry Ferguson,
one of Howells’s composition pupils, and the pieces were appropriately tested in Salisbury Cathedral.
Everything
feels right. Here is the Howells we know from the original organ compositions; there is no reason why the set should not stand
alongside them in recitals or as voluntaries. They are not pieces for the novice organist. There are plenty of notes to negotiate
in both manuals and pedals; as with all Howells, considerable skill is needed in controlling the organ. Careful rhythmic exactitude
is necessary, as well as good feeling for the unique style. Ideally a large romantic instrument is also necessary, with plenty
of playing aids; a resonant acoustic would be a bonus. For the Howells lover these pieces are not to be missed.
