Church Music Training

Organ Teachers & Practice Organs

You may have been attracted to playing the organ by hearing a recording or someone playing. You may have tried to learn yourself and found it difficult to know where to start.

Taking regular lessons with a good teacher will ensure that you progress steadilly with a correct technique that will enable you to develop as a player of one of the most exciting instruments in the world!

Finding a good teacher may be difficult and so here on the left you will find a list of recommended teachers who will be happy to advise you on your next step to positive learning.

Young Organists are able to take lessons with teachers on our list at a subsidised rate. The Tindall Trust will fund regular weekly or two-weekly lessons so that pupils pay £10 per 30-minute session. The trust will also pay for any costs for hiring the organ for the lessons. To be eligible for this funding, pupils must be of school age, ie. between 7 and 18.

'Volunteer Organists' are also financially supported by The Tindall Trust. These are pianists who have been asked to play at their parish church and need a course of lessons on basic playing techniques, advice about repertoire and how to manage the organ console.

Finding an Organ for Practice. After finding a teacher, you will need to find an instrument to practise on. Your teacher may be able to advise you on this and there are always churches willing to help.  The organ needs to be in a mechanically sound condition and ideally have a modern pedal-board and two manuals. A pipe organ with mechanical action would be the best option as this will help you to develop your sense of touch.

Other Courses. You may like to augment your regular lessons with RSCM residential courses for organists on offer at Sarum College. Go to the organists link above for more details and also find out about other training events in the diary page. It's all there for you, so why not make a start!

Practice Organs

It is often difficult to find a church to practise that is convenient and that has an organ in good working order. On this page, you will find a list of churches who have instruments in good repair and who have also indicated their willingness for organists to use their facilities for practice and teaching.

Please use the given name to make first contact, quoting this webpage as your source of information.
